You believe Bitcoin will go up. With $1,000 virtual balance, you open a LONG position on BTC/USD with 10x leverage. Your position size is effectively $10,000. If Bitcoin rises 5%, you make $500 profit (50% return on margin). If it falls 5%, you lose $500. Your liquidation price is 9% away - giving you room to breathe.
You predict Ethereum will drop. Open a SHORT position on ETH/USD with 20x leverage using $500 margin ($10,000 position size). When ETH drops 3%, you profit $300 (60% return). If ETH rises 4.75%, you get liquidated. Shorting lets you profit from downward markets - impossible with spot trading.
